Wood Preservation Methods

Wood science is the study of wood as a material that is renewable and of biological origin. The processes and the tools used to utilize the material is what is known as wood technology. To be able to study wood it has to be compared to other products. The comparison made against other products will include the features of the material against those of wood, the value and the ease it can be worked on. Wood has many advantages and this technology takes the advantages and utilizes them. The wide range of products where wood can be used is just one of the many advantages that give wood an upper hand over other products. Once a tree has been cut down another can be planted in the same spot. The other merit is that a part of the harvested material is at the same time used as energy to produce the product.

For your wooden products and house to stay for long and have a good appearance it needs to be protected. The biggest threat to wood being moisture and insects has to be kept away from the wood. The water particles in the timber increase the rotting and the insects bore through the wood. Many methods are available in the treatment of wood one of the most common being the ACQ – alkaline copper Quaternary. The protection of from this chemical is based on copper. There are a few disadvantages of this method as a mode of wood preservation. It is a highly corrosive chemical that affects most metals that are used together with the wooden products. The concentration of the chemical that will be used to treat a piece of wood will depend on the where it is going to be used and the molecular structure of the wood. The concentration level of the chemical will be different for two pieces of wood where one is used above ground and the other close to a water body.

Another wood treating method that is fast being accepted is the use of copper metal. This method, unlike the ACQ, is friendly to the metal fasteners and its gaining popularity very fast. Micronized copper wood preservative is the correct term to refer this type of preservation. In this process microscopic particles of solid copper metal are mixed in a liquid carrier and injected to the wood at high pressure. In other copper-based preservation methods copper is dissolved in chemicals while in this method copper is driven into the wood as a metal. When this process is used to treat timber the timber properties are increased highly. The timber treated in this way is used in both outdoor and indoor frames that last very long.

Termites cannot eat through timber treated through this method. Unlike other methods of treatment this method is not corrosive. Extensive research over a period of 10 years has proven the effectiveness of this science as one of the best wood preservation methods.
